How to Launch Your Podcast Like a Pro: Tips from San Diego’s Joe Nelson

So You Want to Start a Podcast?

Podcasts have replaced legacy media as the number one platform for information, thanks to the inability of corporate media to record honest interviews. Within the next year, today’s podcast stars will rise to the top, becoming icons, while more and more podcasters emerge to make their mark. So, what does it take to start a podcast? I interviewed San Diego podcaster Joe Nelson to find out.

Joe Nelson is the star of The Producer Joe Show

Joe Nelson is the star of The Producer Joe Show, a podcast that highlights the San Diego broadcasting scene. Joe is no stranger to broadcasting, having worked in local radio, where he gained experience in the production side of things. He started off at KSON radio in the promotions department and later created an online blog focused on the broadcasting industry. But then, world events intervened and ended his online column.

“I did that for many years, and I had really great traction on it. And then the pandemic hit and all my little birdies who were feeding me information—they got fired! I lost all my information, so I really couldn’t do it anymore. And that’s when I moved to podcasts, where I produce podcasts for others and I have my own podcast too.”

Most podcasts are done remotely using a program like Zoom, allowing podcasters to interview anyone, anywhere. This makes podcasting easy and accessible to anyone with a computer and a good mic. While Joe doesn’t consider himself a tech-savvy person, he has smoothly navigated the podcast world.

“I use a program called Streamyard, and it works very much like Zoom – even though I’ve only done one Zoom call – that’s pretty much how I remember it working. I’m able to put graphics up, share videos, and screen-share. It’s really a great program, and it does whatever I need it to do. If people want to start their own podcast, they can certainly start using Streamyard, but I also offer my services and they can reach out to me if they have any questions. It’s very affordable, especially if you can get a sponsor – just one little sponsor – that will cover your fees. And then they can do a podcast and do whatever they want to do. That’s how I got started.”
