One of San Diego’s longest-running bands, The Siers Brothers, are releasing their debut recording this month, via Noize Cartel Records.
Led by guitarists Mark and Steve Siers, the group has been together since the early 1980s, known for its classic rock, reggae, calypso, top 40, country, and blues covers. However, their first, self-titled release, a four-track EP, will be a strictly originals affair.
“I’ve been writing songs since the early 80’s and we used to play a few live,” said Steve Siers. “But our recordings were pretty crude,” he explained. “During the 80’s we played non-stop for literally the whole decade. By 1994 my drinking and drug excesses came to a head, and I went to rehab. Then, I relapsed in 1999 and went into another program. After rehab I personally laid low for a year. The band kept playing and I rejoined later. It was around then I started writing again, and since 2006 I have probably written 50 songs or more, three last year and a couple of new ones this year.”
Recorded at Jim Soldi’s studio in Ramona, the Siers Brothers chose their backing musicians for the EP from their rotating roster of players, including legendary players such as Soldi (“one of the finest musicians I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with”), bassist Rick Nash and drummer Larry Grano, all three known for their stellar work with Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer, Richie Furay (Buffalo Springfield, Poco), as well as their own group, Back to the Garden.
The band came to Noize Cartel’s attention the old-fashioned way—by gigging. “We play at Tio Leo’s once a month,” Siers said. “And Matt (Alcobia) started doing the fantastic sound there. We started talking music and he informed me of his company Noize Cartel Records, so I decided to record our songs and let him do his thing on his end.”
Though it’s taken nearly 45 years for the Siers Brothers to release their debut, the plan is to make up for lost time. “This is the first of two releases for them, there is another EP recorded but still in the mixing stages with their engineer,” Alcobia said. For his part, Siers is so happy with the new EP, he’s ramping up production on his songs. “I’m planning on releasing ten or twelve more this year,” he said good-naturedly.
