San Diego’s Top 10 Videos!

10. The Vaquitos – California

Props go to The Vaquitos for using a show at the iconic Del Mar Fair as stock for live footage. Extra props for not resorting to the knee-jerk film combination of blurred background and slow motion that dominates the craft. Oh, good song too!

9. Catherine Beeks – Ode to Billy Joe

New groovy take on an old song! Fun video framed in an old polaroid snapshot come to life. It’s a documentation of the recording process featuring a who’s who of great musicians. Also an interesting collection of rural looking bridges from god knows where. Fun lyrical title graphics and the best bass track I’ve heard in a long time!

8. Sara Petite – Bringing Down The Neighborhood

Sara basically threw a good ol fashioned back yard house party and filmed all her friends. The song is fun and raunchy and the footage matches the theme. The party moves to some east county dive bar off the 8 for live band footage. The video is low-fi and DYI and looks like it was a blast to film!

7. Aviator Stash – Shot Song

Nice evening photography mixed with a lot of beach shots makes for a good video which really lets the song promote itself. Really clean recording with lots of stereo effects in there. Who does that anymore? These guys!!!

6. Daring Greatly – Blame it on the Whiskey

The strength of this video is rooted solidly in the basic documentation of one of the most powerful live performances I’ve ever seen. Shot at the 2023 San Diego Music Awards, this video captures the raw energy of that epic song. The shooting credit goes to Kevin Hellman’s production team who did a stellar job at filming a live gig. But it’s too good to dwell on that technicality, this video rules!

5. Door 13 – Drowning

This video is a great example of combining set shots with live ones. Kudos to the editor for syncing all that up and kudos to the band for writing a great song. Great production on both video and audio.

4.Doll Riot – Paresthesia

This video really captures the DIY attitude of Doll Riot. The band is young and the video utilizes youthful style points like gritty graphics, cell phone footage and flairy shot transitions. A lot of footage captures outdoor pirate parties that are organic and fun. The song itself reflects that drive and is catchy and fun with a definite punk edge. Riot Grrls are back!

3. Kimmi Bitter – Aquamarine

Kimmi Bitter likes to shoot her videos so that they look like old footage from the sixties. This song has a heavy Hawaiian influence and the washed out and grainy effects of the video compliment that nostalgic sound perfectly. There’s nothing hi-tech about the filming, it looks like it was filmed with a single camera on a boat off of Shelter Island. But the fun and campy content makes this video stand out from the rest!

2. Ash Easton – Blow My Mind

The live-performance shots in the video are second to none! The camerawork is top-notch and the use of available light is stellar. This is combined with outdoor shots of Ash on a perfectly sunny San Diego paradise day. Actually I think it’s Oceanside, but it’s still beautiful. Ash knows exactly how to move and is a natural on stage as well as in front of the camera. You can’t fake that in post-production! The song itself is powerful and features some fantastic slide guitar. Great job in both song and vid!

1. Blackmarket III – Rosalee

Hauntingly beautiful would be the most cliché thing I could say as a writer, but I’m sorry – that’s exactly what this song and video is! When you shoot in the desert, it’s hard to go wrong with all that naturally beautiful imagery. Now film at sunset and it’s a slam dunk. The piano soars in this beautiful song and Roxanne Coverdale’s vocals are simply unmatched. That’s why they are number one!
