San Diego goes DIY!
All across San Diego, our musicians have seen the light and taken matters into their own hands! Bands are going around promoters to book their own shows. Musicians are starting their own studios or venues. And in the case of TheSceneSD, we have started our own media company! All across the county, the kids are doing it for themselves! It’s a revolution.
This makes all the sense in the world, after all, we all know each other so why not grab two of your favorite bands and create a show on your own? You control the line-up and avoid any last-minute surprises. Some take it even further and create their own shows at a winery or brewery, or even private residences rather than deal with a traditional venue. About five years ago I had a venue owner suggest that if I could find two other like-minded bands to play, that would save him a lot of drama. Then, I asked others, and they agreed with that assessment. Now it seems that others have seen the light and the genie is out of the bottle!
Popular bands like Daring Greatly utilize a very hands-on business model where they are in control of where they play and with who. Musicians are now creating their own unique festivals where they gather acts for concerts with names like Girlchella, Vinniepalooza, the Americana Roundup and the City Slicker’s Hoedown. Even businesses like restaurants are teaming up with San Diego Musicians to create fun nights. And the musicians are finding out that it really isn’t that hard at all. We know the bands, the venues and the players so really, we have the best network around.
2025 is going to prove to be the year that San Diego musicians took the wheel and became pro-active in their scene as opposed to sitting around waiting for something to happen. So, climb aboard the DIY train! If you don’t, you will be missing out on a new revolution and get left in the dust!
