Renowned for its focus on the rich and nuanced sound world of the late seventeenth century, Artifex Consort concludes the season with a program that explores the viola da gamba as an ensemble instrument beyond the English consort tradition. Drawing on repertoire from England and Germany during the instrument’s later flourishing, the program features virtuosic works for two bass viols by Christopher Simpson and Johannes Schenck, as well as inventive and seldom-heard compositions for three bass viols by Benjamin Hely and Johann Michael Nicolai.
