Singer Whitney Shay is the latest San Diegan to join the MCU—sort of. Shay’s original song, “Ain’t No Weak Woman,” co-written with Adam J. Eros, from the 2018 SDMA Best Blues Album winner, A Woman Rules The World, has been placed on the soundtrack of the new Daredevil series airing on Disney+.
How Did the Song Get Picked?
How did Shay come to the Daredevil producer’s attention?
“My writing partner and I received the placement with the help of a publisher, who pitched the song to the program’s music supervisor,” Shay said. “The show has not been released yet, so I haven’t seen it, but I was told it’s in the first season, episode 108.”
A Big Moment for Female Empowerment
How does it feel to have her song become part of the MCU soundtrack?
“It’s really energizing, as I feel like the world needs more empowerment these days, especially songs about female empowerment,” Shay remarked.
Shay and the Marvel Universe
Is she a comics reader? Was she familiar with the Daredevil character?
“I’m not a big comic book fan, but I do enjoy some of the Marvel movies,” Shay said. “My cousins did run a comic book shop growing up, so maybe that rubbed off on me somehow. I’ll have to familiarize myself more with the Daredevil storyline.”
What’s Next for Whitney Shay?
In addition to soundtrack work, Shay is keeping a busy schedule on the live circuit, with major shows coming up in the next few months, including:
- April 10 – A big band tribute to Peggy Lee at Lou Lou’s
- April 19 – A variety show, Whitney & Friends, at the Brooks Theatre in Oceanside
“I’m also planning to write and hopefully record a new album this year with my writing partner and my band,” Shay said. “Additionally, I’m excited to be singing for the revamp of the infamous San Diego funk band The Styletones, so look out for those shows coming soon!”
