Rugby has been around for a long time, but has just recently taken a foothold in San Diego due to the fairly new San Diego Legion professional rugby team. Luckily for us, the team is a winner and has provided excitement for local rugby fans since 2017. They even went to the league finals last year – the Major League Rugby version of the superbowl – but lost to their arch rivals the New England Free Jacks. But rugby has had a huge following across the globe for years complete with national teams and even a rugby world cup. And when it comes to winning the world cup of rugby, South Africa and New Zealand dominate the field.
New Zealand’s national team is called the All Blacks and true to the name, they wear all black. They are noted for their fierce play as well as the Haka war dance performed by the team before each bout. The All Blacks are making an extremely rare San Diego appearance on Friday July 19 at Snapdragon Stadium in Mission Valley. They will be playing the Fiji national team in what is sure to be an epic game. Rugby is popular in the former British commonwealth nations as well as extremely popular in Pacific Islander nations. San Diegans will have a rare opportunity to see a live rugby game featuring two of the world’s best competitors.
