Live Music, Lakeside Views, and Italian Eats at Amalfi Cucina Italiana

On a recent Friday evening, I found myself at Amalfi Cucina Italiana in San Marcos, ready for a night of good food, great music, and lively company. I had come to meet a friend and catch Mojo Strut, a band featuring some musician friends of mine. Having never been to Amalfi before, I expected a laid-back Italian eatery—but what I walked into was a buzzing hotspot, packed with diners and music lovers alike.

The restaurant’s modern yet elegant interior immediately set the tone. A sleek bar stretched along one side, and the dining area extended onto a patio overlooking Lake San Marcos. I’d heard it was a prime sunset-watching spot, though I arrived after dark.

As I wandered in search of the band, I was surprised to find an entire downstairs level with its own bar, a separate menu, a gelato station, and, of course, a space for live music.

Mojo Strut was already deep into an electrifying set when I arrived. Their mix of soul, funk, and rock—featuring classics from The Beatles, Sublime, Stevie Wonder, and James Brown—had the crowd fully engaged. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched even little kids on the dance floor, eyes wide with excitement, grooving to the beat with their parents.

By the time my friend showed up, my stomach was reminding me that I was here for more than just the music. While my friend opted for a taco plate (because even at an Italian spot, San Diego’s taco influence can’t be ignored), I faced my usual challenge of finding a gluten-free option at an Italian restaurant.

Luckily, Amalfi’s downstairs menu featured a gluten-free eggplant parmesan that our server assured me was one of their most popular dishes.

They weren’t wrong. The dish was phenomenal—layers of perfectly cooked eggplant, rich tomato sauce, and gooey cheese combined in a way that felt both indulgent and comforting.Every bite was satisfying, and paired with the music, it made for an unforgettable dining experience.

We lingered after our meal, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the rest of Mojo Strut’s set. They closed out the night with a fiery rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On”, sending the crowd—especially the kids—into a frenzy of excitement.

By the time I left, I felt a deep sense of gratitude—for good music, great food, and the vibrant community that makes places like Amalfi Cucina Italiana so special.

If you’re looking for a place that serves up gourmet Italian fare in a lively, welcoming setting, this spot should be at the top of your list.
