Jazz & Food Bliss at Panama 66

In San Diego’s Historic Balboa Park, Panama 66 offers more than just good eats — it’s a sanctuary for live music lovers, especially jazz enthusiasts. One recent evening, we found ourselves under the warm glow of outdoor string lights, indulging in a delightful evening of exceptional food and soulful tunes by the incomparable Gilbert Castellanos and his Young Lions Jazz Conservatory.

Castellanos, a local jazz icon and trumpeter, has been a driving force in keeping jazz alive and thriving in San Diego. His performance that night was nothing short of mesmerizing. The Young Lions — a group of talented, up-and-coming musicians under his mentorship — delivered everything from smooth ballads to high-energy bebop that filled the air with passion and groove. With every note, the crowd was drawn deeper into their rhythmic spell, creating an ambiance where music and cuisine merged into an unforgettable experience.

As we soaked in the melodies, we dined on a Meat & Cheese Board that felt as refined as the music itself. The assortment of cured meats, artisanal cheeses, fresh fruit, and crunchy nuts was perfectly complemented by slices of crusty bread. Each bite was a balanced mix of flavors, from savory to sweet, a perfect reflection of the improvisational spirit of jazz.

We also couldn’t resist the Truffle Parm Fries, which arrived golden, crispy, and misted with aromatic truffle oil. The finishing touch of freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano elevated each bite, making it impossible to put down.

Jazz lovers and foodies alike can agree — Panama 66 is a spot where two passions converge. Between Castellanos’ brilliant trumpet and indulgent bites, the evening left us wanting more, eager to return for another night of jazz-fueled bliss.
