Cully’s Restaurant, Poway’s Breakfast Gem That Surprises in the Best Ways

Every once in a while, you stumble upon a local spot that takes what you thought you knew about breakfast and spins it in an entirely new and very delicious direction. Cully’s Restaurant in Poway is exactly that kind of place. From the moment you walk in, you get the sense that this is not your standard breakfast joint. It is warm, casual, and run by people who clearly care about their food and their guests.

On our visit, my wife ordered the Beef Chilaquiles. Now, I will be honest. I have never been a big chilaquiles fan. Usually, I find the dish either soggy or lacking in flavor. But what showed up at our table changed my mind. This was not the “sprinkle of meat” you often see. These were big, hearty chunks of carne asada you would expect from a well-respected taco shop, not a breakfast plate. Each bite had smoky, grilled flavor, tender texture, and perfect seasoning. The tortilla chips still had some crunch, the sauce was balanced and tangy, and the eggs tied it all together beautifully. After one taste from her plate, I understood why she was smiling from the first bite. If you think you have had good chilaquiles before, you owe it to yourself to try Cully’s version.

My own breakfast adventure was a little unconventional. I had spotted a hamburger breakfast on the menu and noticed they also had some excellent brown gravy. That is when an idea hit me. Why not make a Loco Moco? For those who do not know, a Loco Moco is a Hawaiian comfort food classic: a hamburger patty over rice, topped with a fried egg and smothered in brown gravy. Interestingly, when I asked the owner if they could make it, they were not familiar with the name Loco Moco, but they were happy to give it a try. With their ingredients on hand, including a juicy burger patty, perfectly cooked eggs, and rich, flavorful brown gravy, they nailed it. The result was exactly what I hoped for. Savory, hearty, and absolutely satisfying. It felt like I had a secret menu item all to myself.

What really impressed me about Cully’s is the flexibility and hospitality. Not every place is willing to customize a dish for you, especially when it is something they have never heard of. But here, they seemed genuinely happy to create something special. That kind of service is becoming rare, and it is worth noting.

Portions are generous without going overboard, the coffee is fresh, and the atmosphere makes you want to linger a little longer than you planned. The orange juice is fresh-squeezed, adding the perfect bright and refreshing touch to the morning. There is a friendly, neighborhood vibe, and you can tell this is a spot where locals come regularly.

One thing I also appreciate is that their menu feels approachable but still offers enough variety to keep you interested. Whether you want a classic American breakfast, something with a Mexican twist, or you are in the mood to experiment like I did, you will find plenty of options. It is the kind of place where you can bring anyone, from picky eaters to adventurous foodies, or family members who just want their usual.

By the end of our meal, we both knew we would be back. My wife is already planning her next order of chilaquiles, and I am curious to see what other off-menu creations we can dream up with their ingredients. It is rare to find a breakfast spot that makes you feel like both a regular and a VIP on your first visit, but Cully’s pulls it off effortlessly.

Bottom line: Cully’s Restaurant is more than worth the trip to Poway. Come for the classics done right, stay for the unexpected twists, and do not be afraid to ask for something custom. You might just discover your new favorite breakfast. We will definitely be heading back soon.
