Oasis In San Diego 1995 – 2023

While it doesn’t appear San Diego will be a stop on Oasis’s upcoming world tour, the band has performed here twice before, with both Liam and Noel Gallagher later playing solo concerts as well. Here’s where, when and what they played, who was in the band at the time, opening acts and details on other activities in the area.

The band’s sole local performance with their original lineup: Noel and Liam Gallagher, rhythm guitarist Paul Arthurs, bassist Paul McGuigan and drummer Tony Carroll, the latter leaving Oasis less than three months later. Prior to this show Noel Gallagher stopped in at Off the Record in Hillcrest. A photo of the visit was on the store’s front counter.

09/14/2005 FM94/9 Studios

Before the night’s concert, Noel Gallagher, Gem Archer and Andy Bell stopped by radio station FM94/9’s studios in Mission Valley for an acoustic session and an interview with program director / DJ Michael Halloran. The latter snapped a photo of Gallagher with Falling Doves frontman Chris Leyva as they exited the station. The session was filmed / recorded, with a small portion of “The Importance of Being Idle” being used in the 2007 Oasis documentary, Lord Don’t Slow Me Down (at 26:07).

The band now features the Gallagher brothers and guitarist Gem Archer (later to join both Beady Eye and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds), bassist Andy Bell (Ride, Hurricane #1, Beady Eye), drummer Zak Starkey (The Who), and keyboardist Jay Darlington (Kula Shaker).

Gallagher stopped and restarted opener “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” to get the lighting right. The band featured guitarist Jason ‘Jay’ Mehler (Kasabian, Beady Eye), guitarist Mike Moore, bassist Drew McConnell (Babyshambles), keyboardist Christian Madden (The Earlies) and drummer Dan McDougall.

Pre-show backstage there is a 20-minute 91X-FM Interview with Noel Gallagher by DJ Tim Pyles. Talk includes mention of Gallagher vacationing in San Diego with his family several times. The band includes Noel Gallagher, bassist Russell Pritchard, and pianist Mike Rowe, now joined by guitarist Gem Archer, drummer Chris Sharrock (the Icicle Works, the La’s, World Party, the Lightning Seeds), and keyboardist / vocalist / percussionist Jessica Greenfield, with additional musicians including singer YSEE and Charlotte Marionneau (additional vocals, scissors, percussion, tin whistle).

Prior to that evening’s concert Noel Gallagher joined fans at the Blue Foot Bar in North Park to watch football legends Manchester City emerge victorious, 1-0, over Inter Milan in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League. The packed house serenaded Gallagher with a version of “Don’t Look Back In Anger.”
